With the approval of city authorities, eight Cossacks clad in traditional fur hats and uniforms patrolled a Moscow train station on Tuesday looking for signs of minor public disturbances.
The Kremlin is seeking to use the once-feared paramilitary squads in its new drive to promote conservative values and appeal to nationalists.
The southern Krasnodar province — which includes Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics — launched Cossack patrols in September to crack down on Muslim migrants from the neighboring Caucasus. Now they've made it to the Russian capital.
Cossacks trace their history in Russia back to the 15th century. Serving in the czarist cavalry, they spearheaded imperial Russia's expansion in exchange for special privileges, including the right to govern their own villages. In the 2010 census, about 650,000 Russians declared themselves Cossacks.

Does that give an excuse for nationalization? Let a GOP president try nationalization using the same excuse and not a soul would defend him. The whole situation surrounding Yukos ending up in Rosneft’s hands is far more corrupt than most of what’s happened in the USA thus far.
Khodorkovsky is always cast as some sort of western businessman being oppressed. But consider one thing about him. Under the old USSR system, he and his fellow party members were allowed to create a bank and he had a net worth of over 10 million in 1988.
Becoming a millionaire businessman before the USSR collapsed was done one way only. This was his springboard to be able to gain control of the state oil industry after the collapse.
It’s going to be skewed if people view him as a western businsman. He’s old USSR, mixed with some mob, mixed with some Soros. Putin isnt perfect, but he was right about this guy.

He has promoted Christianity at every turn when he has the chance. I suppose it could be some Byzantine plot to trick us all. But at some point,, every action seems to back upwhat he says about promoting Orthodoxy. He pushes it into Russian life when it was there before 1917. Is that incorrect?
He has been strictly opposed to homosexuality. Gay parades are banned in moscow for 100 years. In ST Petersburg you can be arrested for promoting homosexuality. Is that incorrect?

Just because it feels wrong, it always isnt. It’s really ok to think. I know it’s great loss that we aren’t arrayed across the Fulda Gap anymore. But to them, it’s mystifying that we are stuck in the 80s when it comes to dealing with them.

Indeed. If anyone in that story is a leftist, it’s Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Used party status to become a millionaire, after the collapse, used that status and his ill gotten millions to gain control of state oil.

I think you have learnt Yukos case from MSM. It could have been bought by any other company not only Rosneft. The problem is a few private players could risk to bid considering how fast the company was losing value with all it’s troubles.

And i know you may not realize. but almost every nation on earth owns all the oil and gas rights. The USA is very rare in that private landowners can own the rights.

That doesn’t excuse it. Not when “the crown” in the UK nationalizes either (remember British Leyland? or British Rail?); it’s all leftism and it does not work. How about Amtrak in the USA? Trying to justify any of that kind of stuff in any sense accuses the positions of people like Thatcher and Reagan to be invalid.
A politician promoting Christianity is always suspect, especially over there. The USA never had a state religion; those countries have had state religions for centuries, even millennia when you go back before Christianity. The USA is not the same as they are—the emphasis out of the Founding Fathers was on private morality. Putin is giving the Orthodox church state aid, to boot.

One can buy stock in a lot of nationalized companies, but you can never get it away from the government. That’s a different kind of leftism, one whose name begins with the sixth letter of the alphabet.
Seizure from a criminal (alleged; he wasn’t tried under US jurisprudence after all) is still no excuse for nationalization. And I don’t excuse nationalization in any country.
When Russia stops aid to Iran (and other Iranian toadies in the Middle East such as Syria), I might start to have a different opinion of them, never mind think of them as serious about Islamic terror anywhere but their own soil. That is direct collaboration with a US enemy.

USAF and RuAF are buzzing each other within legal limits for decades.
In july this year USAF F-16 went down the ocean in a Russian Pacific defence zone. They haven’t started any shouting about it, just sent a plane to rescue a pilot.
