Thank you for your polite reply but I disagree.
For the record: I love FR. I spend way too much time on posts looking for gems and always finding several on any subject. The expertise of our FReeper friends is a never ending source of amazement.
There is no better site for issue review, for insight, for following responses easily and quickly. Thanks JR!
Other sites - I rarely can see who is talking to who about what. FR is the best except when we really need it.
First, we monthlies and many others pay for the servers. It would be nice if they worked when it counted.
Second, we rarely hear what the problem was that knocked us down. Is it server overload or actual attacks (hacks/denial of service)?
On the “big” nights if you can’t even load FR much less share one’s insightful, pithy, witty views on a subject then there is a problem.
The world suffered last night being deprived of my witticisms but luckily my family was not similarly denied as they could no doubt hear me yelling at the TV in my man cave (porch/office/hangout)as the debate progressed. ;-)
Lastly, am I with you or against you?
Its hard to say. We will vote for Romney. ABO. Actually he’s turning out to be a better candidate than I expected.
However, as regularly posted here, he’s a Mormon, a cultist, Satan’s minion, whatever. Any number here may stay home and deny our country’s last chance to survive as a Republic.
What a load of, dare I say it, crap?
Mormons, world over are doing good works, defending our Constitution and founding principles(See Glenn Beck for reference) and yet there have been purges. Conservative but not maybe in the right way. Got to be careful.
Sorry to be so long-winded but any post here may be my last ...
Testing: Please vote for Romney/Ryan. ABO!
;-)
Done. Thanks.
Sorry I have failed as a manager (again).
The system is not handling the increased loads and we do not know why yet. John says the system is not getting overloaded, the db is not overloaded, the cpus are mostly idle, the load averages are low, the db load averages are low, just reaches a point where throughput stalls. I’m not a techie and I have no idea how to fix it. I thought maybe we could add another server or more RAM or replace some older servers or something, but I guess John doesn’t think that will do it. There’s something wrong in the system software or the configuration but he’s having trouble finding it.
And I’m really upset too, but there’s not a freaking thing I can do about it until John gets it figured out.
Thanks.
and other ideas like why couldnt we have a chat room for big events?
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freerepublic2/messages?o=1
Yahoo has chat rooms but not sure if FR has one set up, but there is an alternate site there. Been a long time since I used Instant Messenger or whatever it’s called on Yahoo now.
During the debate I couldn't even get FR to load much less post. I am a monthly donor, I am disappointed when FR is down (See DTs for reference) so my post was a cry in the FR-deprived wilderness.
FR failed last night when we needed it. Everybody else was up. Embarrassing as well during a fundraiser where Quarterlies almost run into each other.
I've told Jim that he should cash in, make some serious money on FR, allow a few free posts for a user per year but then EXTRACT $10/annual minimum for all the freeloaders allowed to share their wisdom. He and his lovely gal could then manage FR from their cabana on the beach in the Caribbean as he deserves for his service to our country and our conservative base.
Another idea was simply to post a small gem "gif" next to a poster's screen name like an asterisk to indicate their current donor status - give this year or not? Peer pressure works.
Just so you know, it was either me or David Rodgers who won at dodge ball at Sacred Heart Elementary back in the 60's, I was a state champion wrestler 3 years in a row, played offense, defense and special teams in football, excelled in survival classes and my highest honor? Second Place for my enchilada recipe in a FReeper Canteen contest.
You'll have to track back from my award acceptance post but I stand by the recipe and lie down afterward.
"F*il" is not in my vocabulary. Heh.
Sincerely,
TH54

Retread, not much doubt. Ask a mod to check Jr., and if it gets banned, it was.
LOL! Okay, okay! Perfect excuses. You’re forgiven, and besides, this is a cool thread.
So thanks anyway for the ping.
**Retread, not much doubt. Ask a mod to check Jr., and if it gets banned, it was.**
Nope, still alive.

Maybe it really is HH, Jr.! Perhaps not a troll like daddy.
That would be nice, but a new addition to The List may be in order for a while, at least?
I think William F. Buckley said it best: “Cancel your own...subscription.”
Thank you for so well stating exactly what I was thinking but could not post. Jim has responded, much appreciated, but it appears to be a mystery problem.
Dear Jim,
I do not recall when FR went to CSS style pages vs straight HTML but I have read of CSS bugs severely slowing page loads.
If you went back to HTML page construction the database would not be affected and then you could make a “Please ignore” post and we’d hammer it for testing purposes.
Happy to help ... ;-)
;-)
I figured I'd collect some posts on the problem and (when I could actually get on reliably) respond to all and hopefully get some information on the problem.
Thanks for the suggestion but I know how to manage my bank accounts. You can go here (JR Response to Yaelle) to see a response of some import.
Have a nice day.
I would have thought you'd know this as an old-timer still its never too late to learn. You can go here to see if you're on the list of monthly donors. We're always looking for more. ;-)
So Fred, I guess you had no problems loading FR pages last night ... I couldn't even get on to call you a jerk but find a link to the live debate coverage start at post 500 ~ debate start time and note the complaints of slow loads, multiple posts, etc.
Lastly I guess you could at least see that JimRob recognizes the problem.
Thank you for your opinion. Love to hear from you on 11/7 cause I'll likely be unable to get on FR on the 6th. Sigh.
Figure this one out then get back to me. TANSTAAFL.
Early on I’d send $50 quarterly to FR but sometimes things would be tight so I’d just skip. Its really best to just set up as a monthly I’m certain so JR and the gang can plan.
If you’re not contributing then you’re riding free on my (and many other’s) dime.
I understood what you were saying. I was so crapping happy to get on ANY crappy thread I figgered WTCrap, throw some crap about crap. And I was a monthly donor until my financial situation went totally to CRAP last month.
Just so you know - posting a single word post took 40 minutes and even then I couldn't respond - frustrating.
Hope you like my graphic. ;-)
“If youre not contributing then youre riding free “
No, I am contributing. You bet.
Didn’t realize that this guy could be contributing monthly and that is what he canceled.
Thanks for the explanation, though it sounds like quite a mystery. Is it at all suspicious that the site crashed just as the debate began?
And why would the site have been able to handle all these people in past election years, I wonder.
I hope something can be done. I will donate but I just needed that explanation. Thank you.
I did enjoy the graphic and Hello to you. It is frustrating that FR slows to a crawl during major political events. You received a personal reply from Jim that the servers are not overloaded but something else is going on.
Being a donor here is voluntary as you know. FR needs to stay FRee in order to grow. Maybe there are certain aspects of the services provided by FR that can be suspended during live debates and elections, so to eliminate them as the problem. JMHO
