“We live in a representative democracy”

you only live in a representative democracy if you use the democratic process to elect somebody to represent you. If somebody just votes for people who lose bigtime, they aren’t participating in the democracy and have no representation.

And because most incumbents are easily re-elected, most challengers lose big-time.

There is only one wasted vote and that is the one not cast.
Voting for the loser? Who would that be?
Until the votes are counted, you have know idea who has won or lost.
Like it or not the majority chooses the representative at the election.
So you vote for who you want, as I will vote for who I want.

So we should vote for the person who’s going to lose just because they will lose less?

Representative democracy is about voting for the person that is closest to what you believe. If everyone does this - then democracy will actually represent the will of the people.
