For the record. The phones cost $9.95 month. I consider them a necessity in today's world.

You do realize that you are funding those phones through a Universal Access Fee, don't you? You are paying for someone else's phone. If they can't afford it out of their own pocket, they don't need to have one. I've never owned a cell phone and I'm completely comfortable without one.
They aren't a necessity of life.
