FLASHBACK VIDEO: "Ex rebels fill Libya's security vacuum"

Libya's interrim government is encouraging former rebel fighters to sign up for the police and army.

After the fall Muammer Gaddafi, Libya was left with a security vacuum. The interrim government had a strategy to improve safety by creating the Supreme Security Committee -the SSC.

They are now more than 100 000 former rebel fighters patrolling neighbourhoods across Libya to curb criminal activities and prevent attacks.

While Human rights groups accuse this force of making random arrests and running secret prisons where torture is common, some appreciate the work of these men and think that without them, any government would be weak.

Brief Summary:

Wednesday – September 12th: Deputy Interior Minister Wanis Al-Sharif said that U.S. staff were rushed to a Benghazi safe house after the initial attack on the consulate (see VIDEO below on initial attack footage) and an evacuation plane with U.S. commando units then arrived from Tripoli to evacuate them from the SAFE HOUSE (see VIDEO below for ? “safe house” footage.

Al-Sharif said it the safe house was supposed to be a secret place hence the surprise that the “armed groups” knew about it (considering that the security forces were full of socalled “ex-terrorists” one can’t be that surprised). Sharif said that two U.S. personnel were killed at the safe house and two others killed at the main consular building and between 12 and 17 wounded (who were the 12-17 wounded?). Witnesses stated that the mob included tribesmen, militia and other gunmen (see thread starter VIDEO as to the possibilities of who these people are). A guy called Hamam, who took part in the attack, said Ansar al-Sharia cars arrived at the start of the protest but left once fighting started (per Reuters). Apparently the “protesters” were running around the compound just looking for Americans, they just wanted to find an American so they could catch one,” he said. “WE STARTED SHOOTING AT THEM” “We started shooting at them, and then some other people also threw hand-made bombs over the fences and started the fires in the buildings,” he said (see VIDEO below - “just after attack on the embassy”).

There were some Libyan security for the embassy outside (one can see them at the beginning of the VIDEO footage on “just after attack on the embassy” see below) but when the hand-made bombs went off they took off. Hamam said he saw an American die in front of him in the mayhem that ensued. He said the body was covered in ash.

June 2012 - Libya’s transional government is encouraging former rebel fighters (100,000 of them) to sign up for the police and army. Who were these rebels or ex-terrorists who were maurading the city as the police? Were they assigned as security to protect the US Embassy? I haven’t read anywhere that the military were present. Witnesses after the attack and murder at the Libyan Embassy stated that the mob included tribesmen, militia and other gunmen. Could some of the security personnel at the Embassy have been the hired guns depicted in the al-jazeera video above?

One can see what appeared to be perhaps a remnant security force at the beginning of the video. One of them said something like “they’ll kill”...in English. One can hear shots in the background at the end of the video.

Sharif: TWO were killed at the main consular building and between 12 and 17 were wounded.

Who were killed at the US Embassy and who were the wounded? We need names.

“Sharif said that two U.S. personnel were killed at the safe house...”

If the video depicts the “safe house” how did the hoodlums witnessed there know where the safe house was located? Was the Ambassador killed at the safe house or at the compound? If he was killed at the compound surely they was no need to take his body to the safe house? Why would they take him there...? Were the people in the video good samaritans or the killers?
