It was a gang of around 10 thugs. It is the new pattern: rather than rob a store with a gun (which can get the perp hefty prison time), they rob it with numbers.
This being New York state, if the store owner blows away one or more "young teens who only wanted some skittles", he can expect to get even worse treatment than Zimmerman got.
The young woman was stupid to try to intervene.

The young woman was stupid to try to intervene. I'd give her a break. She wasn't trying to stop the theft she was trying to help the store owner's son who went after the thugs. He was the idiot.
