It was a total waste for us. We have an older grill with a bastard fitting. The propane place we got our groupons for (which was 30 minutes away) didn't have the required adapter, so we wasted $30 on the damn groupons.
It's funny though - every other place in town that fills propane tanks has the adapter for our bottle. What a rip off!

We have an older grill with a bastard fitting. I make it a habit of swapping out the fittings on any device that has one that isn't standard. You can find a replacement for around $10. If you're talking about the old style tank valve with only the female reverse thread fitting, those should be retired by now as they are no longer legal to fill.
