Useless but interesting Old West factoids.

• The 1873 .45 Colt 'Peacemaker' wasn't 'the handgun' of the Old West Gun Slinger or Cowboy. The most popular caliber Colt 'Peacemaker' used over time was the .44-40, aka .44wcf. As that is the caliber that the 1873 Winchester Rifle was chambered in. It was never made in .45 Colt - not ever 'back then'. So natch all would want to carry one type of ammo so the .44-40 was it. The .45 Colt model was the SAA (1873 Single Action Army, model P(eacemaker)) used by the US Military. Granted the .45 Colt was used by folks starting in 1873 but eventually not as much as the .44-40. And the 44-40 Colt model's name was the Frontier Six-Shooter and came out in 1877.

• And back then many were still using Cap & Ball pistols. The 1858 New Army Remington, .44 Cal (mfg to 1877) or the 1851 Navy Colt, .36 Cal. The cap & ball Navy Colt was Wild Bill's handgun of choice and he used them until the day he was shot in the back an died. He would empty, clean, and reload the cylinders every morning due to humidity changes overnight effecting the black powder load. [A 'pop' from the percussion cap was not a good sound to hear when you pulled the trigger ;-)]
