Yeah. Some Paultards got neutered. The big lie that the GOP-E and FR 'party first' hacks (like you) are pushing is that this was all about Ron Paul. It wasn't. It was aimed squarely at the TEA Party and preempting any potential insurgent challenge to Romney in 2016.

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of crying to that effect but no evidence.

Pure Alinsky tactic. Paint those you disagree with as being among the worst you can find. That way the opposition is distracted away from the argument as they defend themselves. Its not really surprising since Saul Alinsky seemed to have some influence on George Romney after helping him "solve" the problems of Detroit.
In the end it won't matter who they blame because it doesn't change the fact or the damage done to the GOP yesterday.
Looking back, George Romney was a pro at using the Alinsky tactics. He demanded that the party evict all the "Birches, racists, and police staters". He then stomped off like a little girl when he lost and he and his purist moderate pals actively worked to defeat Goldwater. Since they succeded they've pointed to Goldwater's defeat (That they engineered) as evidence that the party needs to be moderate for the past 50 years.
