I remember Carla, and seeing slabs with nothing on them but bent and torn individual pipes rising up for 2 or 3 feet out of the slab.
No house, no tubs, no framing, or sinks, just a slab stripped clean.
After Carla, my dad bought a large hull that was lying in a farmers field, a very long distance from the coast (2 or 3 miles?), he built a shrimper out of it.
By the way, “Hurricane Parties” used to be more common I think, and so very often they would simply be erased, disappeared, with no trace, or tales to tell, or even physical evidence that they had existed.
If I had Hurricane Katrina to do again, I’d have left Biloxi many days before to live with relatives in Iowa until it was all over. If you can evacuate, do so. We came **this close** to being killed and many people died a block or two away. If you can get out, get out.

I’m in Mobile. One thing about being a half assed prepper is there’s not a lot to do before a hurricane. I’m just going to get some gas today. There was actually a little bit of a run on gas yesterday. I hope we don’t run out (that may sound unlikely to people who aren’t in hurricane land, but it can happen). Walmart was out of gas cans yesterday already but Lowe’s had a pallet in the middle of the aisle. The worst I’m looking for out of this is probably having to chainsaw my way out of my neighborhood and losing power for a couple of days. I work in a shipyard on the river so how bad that gets damaged is a concern. It all depends on whether it hits to the east or west of us as to surge damage. I’m too far away from the coast to worry about boarding.
good article! Praying for ALL of my family and my husband’s family—nearly 75% of ‘em live between FWB FL and Slidell, LA, most on or a block from water. Sigh. Living near the beautiful Gulf Coast comes with a lot of sweat & tears, too.
