Excellent article. The only thing that stops a terrorist is his death. The sooner we in the “civilized” west understand this, the sooner we have real security.
I believe it is time for Israel to go on the offensive. It should announce that any act of aggression against it will result in a full-scale invasion of the sponsoring country, with no apologies to the “international community” for the resulting destruction. A regime that endorses terrorism forfeits its claim to umbrage and can be legitimately overturned.
Israel has nothing left to lose. It is condemned when it defends itself, so why not risk the condemnation for a far better solution?
Excellent article. My experience goes deep into that time and place. Greenfield hits the nail on the head.
Excellent piece.
However, one question: How closely was Mahmoud Abbas involved with the Achille Lauro incident?
One of the leaders of the terror attck and the group claiming reponsibilty (PLF) was Abu Abbas (Mohammed Zaydan). He was captured by US forces in Baghdad 2003. He died several months later still in US costody. Interestingly enough “moderate” spokesman for PA Saab Erakat reacted to the capture and claimed that the US violated the Oslo peace accords when it seized Abbas. (Try not to laugh, back there in the last row.)
Apparently CNN in one case mixed up Mahmoud Abbas and Abu Abbas, but not so long ago the Israeli newspaper Arutz Sheva (who usually manages to keep its Arab terrorists apart) wrote that “Mahmoud Abbas, considered a moderate by the United States and Israel, has admitted to masterminding the Achille Lauro hijacking.” The paper did not provide any reference to that statement, though.
Two further points: The family of Leon Klinghoffer, the US citizen who was murdered during the Achille Lauro hijacking sued the PLO (and not the PLF). M Abbas was already then a major player in th top echelon of the PLO.
From Wikipedia: “Bassam al-Asker [one of the hi-jackers] was granted parole in 1991. He was thought to have died on February 21, 2004, but according to the Lebanese Daily Star, in 2007 he was found in Lebanon, a Fatah (PLO) fighter and commander, training Palestinian militiamen to fight the US army alongside Iraqi rebels, and loyal to Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Maazen) the head of the Palestinian Authority....”
So, the PLO was certainly involved in the Achille Lauro hijacking, and thus Mahmoud Abbas was in all likelihood one of those informed about the plans. But has he really admitted to be in charge of the planning? That ought really put stop to anyone calling him a “moderate”.

Appeasement and Acquiescence are enablers of thug personalities and cults who will continue to probe and find boundaries to cross, which “will” always lead to more injury and death.
Better than just killing the terrorist — kill his extended family — mother, father, wife, kids, aunts and uncles. Kill as much of his clan as possible and even the stupidest of Muslims will understand martyrdom has a price. The question: is it worth it to cause the extinction of your family name?
A lot of our problems stem from the fact that the left has always seemed to hold a romanticised view of moslem terrorists. Often, you see loopy liberal women (and some liberal men too!) getting all doe eyed over an “Arabian Knight.”
