Let's say I went to college with Bill Clinton (I didn't, but just for discussion). He was a hippie then and even if, EVEN IF, I didn't know him I would have seen him around campus. Even if, EVEN IF, I hadn't seen him at the school, with a former classmate becomes President of the United States, you dig out the yearbooks, call your classmates, etc., at the event.

Again, not an Obama supporter, but I went to a large college (30,000+), in an urban setting. The campus had numerous schools; e.g, Medical, Engineering, Telecomm/MIS, General Studies, etc. Outside of classes in my major, and outside of any groups with whom I regularly associated, I would be very hard-pressed to identify ALL the students within my class. Truthfully, I doubt I could name all the students within my major, given the variety of disciplines within.

That said, if I were to see someone now, or maybe hear a name, I might be able to say, "oh yeah, I went to school with them."

In Obama's case, while no ONE student might be able to vouch for him all through school, surely, SOMEONE should be able to say (and their transcripts could verify), that they remember him in a class or two. If he was ANY kind of a standout student (which many highly doubt), professors or instructors with records of teaching during that time period, should be able to identify him.

Agreed. I went to college with a fellow who later won two Oscars and several Grammys. Since we were in the same class at one college and sat a few feet apart, I could vouch for him. We later went to the same university for further study. I never knew he was there at the same time I was since we didn't follow the same major. It only popped up later when I read biographical material on him.

I don’t remember the kindergarten folks (we moved around a lot, Air Force), but I remember most of the people in the 8th grade (our graduating grade school class), and my small girls’ high school. I remember maybe 20 from college and have found a few of them on FaceBook - they all remembered me when I messaged them. There is no way that if my name came before the public, that somebody, somewhere, wouldn’t remember me.

Usually there are public interest stories in magazines - fluff like, “The President was my roommate” or some such. How come no one has come forward to talk about this guy, even if it is in a supportive way? It seems awfully strange to me...

I remember plenty of them because I spent 4 hours a day with them every day. I spent 3-4 hours a week with people at college, in the class. The rest of the time was working 40-60 hours and studying. Not say O was doing either of those for sure:-)

It's simply not true to say that "no student" and "no professor" remembers Obama from Columbia. Two students - Michael Wolf (now head of MTV) and Phil Boerner - have given interviews about Obama at Columbia. Boerner was even his roommate for a brief time.

As for professors, Michael Baron has been outspoken about how 'brilliant' Obama was as a student.

Now, I'd hope that more than one professor remembers me from undergraduate school, and more than two students. I find that odd.

But we're off the mark to keep repeating that NOBODY remembers Obama from Columbia.

Exactly! You would have to lead a very hermitish life for no one to remember you at all. Hard to do and attend college courses. I went to CU in Boulder for one year and had two roommates. One each semester. I can only remember the first name of the second one but if either of their names were published now I would immediately recognize them and think "that was my college roommate's name."

From that one year there are probably 20 others whose names I would recognize who lived in my dorm, I shared a class with or I met in some other setting. None of them did anything outstanding to be remembered by I just spent some time around them. If any of them became famous now a lot more memories would come flooding back.

OK, that's fine. That seems quite a contrast with this statement...

I wouldn’t recognize anyone I went to undergraduate, or graduate school by face or by name, and I doubt they would remember me.

I was at GS at the time and in poly sci. I took all graduate level courses as an undergraduate. GS students were totally anonymous and generally 2nd class citizens at Columbia. And yes the requirements to get into GS were pretty easy.

I believe too that Obama went to Columbia; that likely he was there as a GS student and that he got in as as foreign exchange student. That makes best sense of the info given.

He has mentioned that he was still paying off college loans in his 40’s as was I.

My step-dad went to Baltimore City College.

Baltimore City College is a high school. He was able to get a pretty good job with that diploma right out of high school. His first employer thought Baltimore City College was a college. My step-dad didn’t actually disabuse him of that notion.
He did eventually get a real college degree, but he had fun with that high school diploma.

It is still called Baltimore City College. Also referred to as the Castle on the Hill.
