Look at the “official names” for the first row and the second row.
Don’t focus on the names (for the moment)-— just count the commas.
Doing so indicates there were 11 girls in each row. That also reveals how Stanley could be said as being 4th from the right.
Gotcha!
So the three girls we can see in the back row after Maxine Box, are Sue Botkin (that’s Susan Blake) Marylin Close, and Stanley...
followed by .....JONES. GINNY HAYWARD, SYLVIA KING.
And that’s why Maraniss says Stanley is back row fourth from right, because she wasn’t at the end, THERE ARE THREE GIRLS MISSING.
