Obama to Miami anchor: Hugo Chávez has not posed 'serious' national security threat

Oscar Haza, a well known Miami Spanish-language broadcast journalist and anchor, scored an interview this week in Washington with President Barack Obama in which Obama said Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has not posed a "serious" national security threat to the United States.

The full interview aired Tuesday night on A Mano Limpia, Haza's nightly show on WJAN-Channel 41, better known as América TeVe. The show had shown portions of the interview Monday night, with Haza live in D.C., and teased to the president talking about Cuba and Venezuela.

The Dominican-born Haza, who also hosts a daily morning radio show that recently moved to Univisión's WAQI-AM (710), better known as Radio Mambí, said he was one of eight journalists from eight swing states invited to the White House -- the only one from Florida -- to speak to the president and other administration officials as Obama pushed his plan to keep some Bush-era tax cuts but eliminate them for incomes greather than $250,000 a year.

Obama would not recognize a serious national security threat if it flew into his building at 9 AM in the morning.

Sadly he does not see Chavez as a threat because he sees Chavez' ideology as compatible with his.

As much as I detest zero, he is correct. Chavez is the Mouth That Roared; IOW all hat and no cattle.

From the time he was electd, Chavez has crossed the globe to link up with various dictators in an effort to make himself relevant. So far, he is still just an annyance to most of the world and the only threat he poses is with his mouth.

The Venezuelan military is a bit of a joke - there were some high-profile purchases of advanced Russian equipment early in Chavez’s reign but most of those appear to be inoperable - and the supposed purchase of Kilo submarines appears to be dead.

In the grand scheme of the universe Venezuela in fact isn’t much of a threat to the US. There have been no terrorist attacks or attempts linked to Iranians or Hezbollah operating out of Venezuela; not to say there couldn’t be in the future, but those guys operate in a lot of places.

I’m not sure what people want or expect the President to say about Venezuela. I do know the US military doesn’t exactly toss and and turn at night worrying about Venezuela, and I’m sure Obama’s comments simply reflect what he’s been briefed.
