I’ve read that the rumors that Pius XII was a Nazi collaborator were part of a KGB disinformation campaign. It is certainly consistent with their aims.

The slander against Pius XII was fuelled by American leftists with a spate of screeds the last 20-30 years or so. It is generous to blame the KGB and not simply the latterday hatemongers and liars of the left.
