I have an old artisian well on the property. I’m going to get a manual pump for it and run a line down. At least until I can get my auto standby generator I’ll have water from my well to use.

We bought a semi-rural property in 2009 and I observed that there were two switches on the circuit breaker that were labeled "well." There was no sign of the wellhead, so I contacted the State Water Resources Board and received a map of all the water wells drilled in my section. There was no record of any well drilled on my property, so it must have been done off the books. Do you have any suggestions on how I could locate the wellhead? Thanks.

You have wiring underground from your house to the wellhead. You can follow this with a metal detector. As an aside, plastic pipe going to septic tanks is often buried with a strand of wire to make it easy to find in the same fashion.

Witching rods... don’t ask me, but they do work. Metal detectors as electrically piped wells are often piped or will contain a collar for the hose at the top. Look for a flat piece of ground that might have contained the original home or barn. They often dug the well first back in the day before they built the house next to it.

Best of luck. A well is a wonderful thing!

You can probably get someone there with a ground radar unit that can sense density. It should be able to tell where here is a well has been dug. Other than that I’m not quite sure.
