Considering there’s very little public lands these days, caches every mile or even a day’s distance is near to impossible. If I see someone digging and stashing something on my property, well, it wouldn’t be pretty.

To be honest, how many of us would make it more than a couple hours from home before passing out and calling it quits. I know I wouldn’t get far on foot and I can’t imagine anywhere else could be any better than right here. If nothing else, I have water and shelter.

Yeah, most people reading that probably think you're a wimp but I can relate. No problem for me to hike or bike on a level surface or normal road hills but last year I spent a couple hours trampsing in Arroyo country out west -- steep gulleys, rocky outcroppings and uneven dry creek beds. Two hours pretty much did me in. I was starting to get worried about getting back to the truck before dark or at all especially without much water on me. I have a new found respect for cross-country travel and carry a 2m ham transceiver now on similar adventures. Those places are the same ones where cell coverage is non-existent.
