They were outnumbered 100-to-2. Their best solution would have involved STAYING IN THE CAR and flooring the gas to get out of there. If I find myself in an ugly crowd and somebody throws something at my windshield, I'm just going to floor it, get out of there, and deal with the police once I'm in a safe location.

The best solution would be to head to the projects in question, weld the doors shut, set the explosives, and solve the problem.
That isn’t exactly due process, but since the rule of law gave up, the residue you have behind such abdication is that you take the law into your own hands out of necessity.
You patrol it, you arrest the perps, and you put them in jail after trying them. If the police aren’t willing to do that, then trapping everyone in the building and lighting them on fire or demolishing them is your next option.
It’s not an ideal option, but its the one that remains. The alternative is that the feral mobs roam the streets.

In that situation one must not brandish nor threaten with the firearm. Take it out and use it against the closest threats. If you do and are lucky, you will get to live that day. You must realize that in that situation there are ringleaders that want you grievously injured or dead. Those are the ones to shoot first if you can identify who they are in the mob.
