Federal Judge Enforces Sharia-Compliance in Ohio Prisons

In 2011, death row inmate Abdul Awkal sued an Ohio prison because he was receiving non-halal food while in prison. As a consequence, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction banned all pork products in prison.

This year, prisoner James Rivers filed a lawsuit arguing that pork should not be outright banned. He reasoned that, should Muslims not want to eat pork, they had the right to, but that it was discriminatory to ban pork for everyone. Additionally, the prison did offer meals without pork products in them before the ban.

To reinforce Rivers's lawsuit, prison authorities argued that the change to all-halal food could potentially "bankrupt the system." Despite all of this, a federal judge has thrown out Rivers's case, refusing to even hear it in court.

The judge stated that forcing non-Muslims to adhere to a Muslim diet is not the establishment of a religion because everyone eats the same food. He did not comment on the fact that, before the lawsuit by Awkal, all prisoners ate the same food in the first place.

The judge is wrong. Forcing everyone to eat a diet that is based on a religion (or in my opinion a cult) ie... halal is establilising a religion. I’m tired of muslims always whining and getting their way. I thank God I live in Idaho.

I'd say just fed em’ Mad Cow meat, carp, bull heads, rabbits and goats. Besides all of that, if they are so adamantly religious, what in hell are they in prison for in the first place?

Forcing everyone to eat meat that was given up in ritualistic slaughter to Allah IS establishing a religious tradition.

Additionally, bigoted muslims at Ask the Imam and other sights say that while non-muslim food MAY be halal, it’s best to ONLY buy from muslims.

So this devout Muslim is concerned about faithfully maintaining every peccadillo of his religion in prison, but he had no problem doing every thuggish thing imaginable to land in prison in the first place? Such people should not be catered to. At best it’s his way of saying “F you!” to “da man” and trying to waste society’s time and money more than he already has. But one has to wonder who is the bigger threat to society in the end: The stupid thug who screams for attention; or the judge who, with a wink and a nod, demands that the thug be listened to.

Southern Christians must have pork - lots and lots and lots of pork with lots and lots of bbq sauce. Consumption of pork has been built into our genetic makeup for millenia . To deprive a Southerner of pork, no matter where he was born, is cruel and unusual punishment bordering on torture.

The muslim in question had a choice whether to be in prison or not. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time or don’t like the menu. Should’a taken him down to visit Joe, and let him eat peanutbutter and wear pink panties. I’m pretty sure pink is halal.
