Because Santorum was heading to a loss in his home state of Pennsylvania. Losing his home state (again) would destroy any chances he could have in future races.

By pulling out now, he preserves his chances in future races. Rick is still young.

that is what I thought too . . . lose PA and he is done forever plus he can be with his family and ill daughter and live to fight another day, he is what 52 or 54.

Good point. Republicans almost always pick the previous loser the next time around. Next time it could be "Rick's turn".
