having to use cox for e-mail stinks, I can’t use my color laser printer, it wonpt accept it or it’s drivers, for starters.

What do i have to do, buy a new harddrive?

if its not connected to the internet and doesn’t need to interface with the latest interconnect schemes, run Windows 95 if you want.

but if you have a network facing system you’d better be able to support decent lockdown and security tools and
the world as we know it has moved on, like it or not, from support for the legacy XP.

what’s au courant in Linux distros these days? one can barely keep up...

If it has more than 4GB of system memory stick with windows 7, you can make windows 7 look like XP and win 7 can use more than 4GB memory. Xp can only use 3-4GB memory.
