The carpet-bombing of Gingrich in Florida allowed Santorum to emerge by coming up the middle.

Ron Paul, at Mitt's command, carpet bombed Rick Santorum in Iowa and Florida and now Newt Gingrich is carpet bombing Rick with negative ads in Illinois and other Northern states using his last millions in an effort to keep Santorum from beating Mitt so that some “brokered convention fantasy” in his delusional and ego maniacal mind may happen.
Newt is a Mittbott in realpolitik and Romney's people are laughing their butts off at their useful idiot.

That is an acceptable explanation for the same reason that the anti-Perry ads helped Gingrich.
