We talked about the Department of Energys idiotic $50 LED light bulb thats going to save energy and make the world a better place in which to live. The DOE even gave out a $10 million prize to Philips for creating this loser. Whos going to spend $5,000 to outfit their entire home with the wondrous energy savers? As time goes on, more and more traditional light bulbs will be banned, leaving you few choices.
However, Congress in its finite wisdom left open a glaring loophole. The ban does not apply to rough service light bulbs. These bulbs are used in areas subject to high levels of vibration and movement, such as train stations or industrial areas. In addition, these bulbs last longer and are readily available through numerous sources. Lets see this become a major civil disobedience movement. Let the Congress know that they may be able to control your toilet, dishwasher, washer and dryer, but not your light source.
Today we are getting some new peeps to raise as laying hens. Last night I was setting up their new home and had to scrounge around the houses to find an old-fashioned light bulb that would provide the needed heat for them.
Philips has been making LED lights for years, I still can’t figure out why they needed money.
There are many start ups building on older tech, enhancing the process, creating better light, way less cost and longer life - no government money, investors only.
I stocked up on ruff duty bulbs as the floro’s set off my wives seizures.
Yes, these are available, but be aware that in order for them to last longer and be able to withstand rougher service, they have thicker filaments and do not produce the same amount of light as traditional incandescent bulbs of the same wattage. So, a 60 watt rough service bulb may only produce the same lumens as a 40 watt standard bulb.
So, what we are going to see is somewhat similar to what happens with the stupid water saving shower heads and toilets. The toilets often have to be flushed twice to get the job done, and people end up taking the water flow restrictors out of the shower heads in order to get any flow. Otherwise, it takes twice as long to take a shower.
Order some rough service lightbulbs and send them to the department of the Navy, or pick a ship of your choice.
Obama is destroying our Navy to the point that some ships don’t replace burned out light bulbs because their commanders say they can’t afford ($50) bulbs. This is on vessels deployed in the service of OUR country!
Shame on Obama and Shame on Congress! Shame on us for letting them get away with this disgrace!
What we are going to see is weak pallid American citizens who don’t know their duty to protect their own freedom! We are going to see more and more of our freedoms destroyed because our citizens don’t stop it.
Back when I read the bill, I seem to remember that the agency tasked with oversite of the bulb requirements will have the ability to monitor rough service, and several other categories of exempted bulbs and ban them whenever they feel like it, with no congressional action needed.
Lots of people with wells and pump houses use light bulb heat to keep pipes from freezing
I realize this is an old thread, but I really don’t care, because while we need to blame the liberals for plenty of things, seriously look where we are today! But unfortunately the imp George W. Bush is to blame for the The Energy Independence and Security Act (P.L. 110-140, H.R. 6) signed into law on December 18, 2007 which briefly, mandated a ban on importing or manufacturing any incandescent lamps defined as “General Service” after December 31, 2011 that does not meet phased, increasing energy efficiency hurdles as defined in the law.
This included the ludicrous Section 331 (c) MARKET ASSESSMENTS AND CONSUMER AWARENESS PROGRAM - subsection (2) authorized $40,000,000 ($10,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2009 through 2012) to industry trade groups and “other interested parties, to carry out a proactive national program of consumer awareness, information, and education that broadly uses the media and other effective communication techniques over an extended period of time. (I would seriously like to know where this money was used!)
Thank God the current GOP has sharply applied the brakes on this train wreck by refusing to allocate any money for enforcement, among other efforts.
And finally, your unsubstantiated rumor concerning Navy ships not replacing burned out bulbs is nothing short of an outright lie. This per Sandy Winnefeld, (James A. Winnefeld, Jr.)I’ll let you search for him....
In conclusion, yes Obama has contributed and is still trying to contribute, to the demise of this country, but... Making blatantly false statements against Obama, Democrats, liberals, and other socialist morons does nothing to help us!
Yes, and just like the chicken farmer who used incandescent bulbs for heat for young chicks, there are MUCH better options for wells, pump houses and yes, even young chicks. Even in 1974 we stopped using household bulbs (incandescent) for keeping the chicks warm, switching to specialized heat bulbs. Wells and pump houses are also much better served by a dedicated heat source with a thermostat. In the long run it is also cheaper to spend the money for the correct heat source.
As far as the “ban” on incandescent bulbs, I’m 100% against it. This is because they don’t last as advertised nor do they appear to save energy.
I’ve spent a small fortune on the “new” CFL bulbs as the old ones burned out. Most of the CFL’s I purchased are warrantied for 7 to 9 years. So far I’ve had 1 start a fire within 3 months of purchase, 8 fail in less than 1 1/2 years and 3 more failed before hitting the 2 year mark.
I just purchased an Energy Use Meter for individual appliances, I am going to measure actual electrical use in a table lamp using a CFL bulb vs. incandescent because after replacing nearly 35 bulbs (6 were 100 watt all turned on by one switch in the garage)my electricity bill certainly has not reflected the savings I was told we would gain by switching
