We could have done it in the same manner that we helped the Solidarity labor union in Poland. Thus the mullahs could have been brought down without the United States firing a shot. Call it asymmetric warfare. We were creative back in the eighties. Simple acts like Jeanne Kirkpatrick just reading off the names of the Soviet refuseniks before the UN General Assembly emboldened the dissidents behind the Iron Curtain. That was when the United States stood for freedom, and not bowing before dictators.

I am sure many people have wondered what will happen when a Nuclear plant is hit by bombs.
I believe we will be finding out soon.
Nothing. All the components of either a uranium or plutonium bomb have to be in a very precise geometric relationship for a nuclear "boom" to happen. Said precise geometry is destroyed by the leading edge of the shockwave from the attacking weaponry.
The only way this is avoidable is if the weapon is equipped with a radiological "dead man switch" which will automatically trigger the bomb with detection of a high pulse of gamma radiation (which, moving at the speed of light, preceeds the shockwave, which only moves at about the speed of sound).
But then your own bomb is helping destroy the facility you want NOT to be destroyed.
And, of course the "deadman switch" only works if the attacking weaponry is itself nuclear.....chemical explosions won't trigger....all their effect arrives at the speed of the shockwave.
They should just do it already.

I was thinking of what happens when the core cannot be cooled. When the hardware to cool the nuclear fires is gone.
We saw what happened and is still happening in Japan. What will happen in Iran when technicians at the Nuclear plant are killed during the bombing and the facility to maintain or to stop the nuclear reactions are destroyed and the thing begins a meltdown.
The nuclear fallout will not be from an atomic explosion. It will be from plutonium being scattered using conventional weaponry.

My bad. I mis-read the comment as what would happen to a nuclear WEAPON rather than a nuclear PLANT if it were to be hit by an external explosive (hey, early AM, no coffee). But in that case, there will be a lot of other "things" in addition to plutonium that will be scattered. "Pu" will be the least of their worries.

I expect Israel will hit the reactor hard enough that the core is burst apart. In that case, fission won’t continue because the fissile material won’t be in a workable geometry.
There will likely be some local area contamination, but that’s about it.

If the Iranian people had good sense they would remove this Mullah and Ahmadinejhad before they get their country destroyed.
IMO Ahmadinejhad and this Mullah intend for the bombing of Iran t be like a suicide bombing. I have no idea the thinking behind it, unless they feel it will cause a great Muslim uprising. Which it may.
