Carrier Disposal Proves Difficult to Navy
Naval Open Source INTelligence ^ | 2/20/2012 | Naval Open Source INTelligence

flight decks that once thundered and boomed with jet aircraft are silent. The passageways and compartments where thousands of sailors worked, ate and slept are empty. The once meticulously swept and kept decks are worn and torn, some covered in bird droppings.

The names of the Navy’s seven decommissioned non-nuclear aircraft carriers conjure up well-earned reputations as Cold War bulwarks. And while at least some are the objects of preservation efforts, chances are slim more than one will survive as a museum ship. The rest are taking up valuable pier space, and the only thing the Navy wants now is to get rid of them

Turn them into prison ships, park them south of Mexico, perpahps Guatamala, El Salvador, etc. Send criminals who are also illegal aliens to be housed in them and hire CHEAP locals to be prison guards.

IF the eco-freaks would stop worrying about how “clean” their disposal will be, there are folks in India who make a living breaking up ships like CVs.

I thought I remember seeing the bridge there.Damned old age and wishful thinking.I do remember seeing the photo of the bridge lying on the deck. Thanks for clearing up that misconception on my part.

And they ground up my first ship USS Ticonderoga CVA 14 for scrap. I worked on the flight deck-Crash/Salvage 67-69, very exciting times.

Park them in the Hudson River. During rush hour, turn them to span the river and act as bridges. NYC bound traffic on the lfight deck, NJ bound on the hangar deck. When rush hour ends, turn them parallel to the shore line so river traffic can again pass.

I think they should sale perpetually in International Waters and become independent nations, so I would have some way to leave America to the socialists and start over.

It could expand it’s holdings by picking on some uninhabited island, planting a flag on the shore, and claiming it for a new land.

We need some new place to which we can emigrate where personal initiative means something, and we are not ruled by the hive.

I served on JFK, 86 - 90, when she was still a good ship in Norfolk, before Philadelphia Naval Shipyard screwed her up and then the Navy sent her to Mayport and cut all funding for upkeep.

I saw her after decommissioning. She was towed up to Norfolk and sat at a pier at the Naval Station for about 6 months until her space was ready in Philly. It was depressing to see her daily at the pier with all the rust and her mast cut down and welded to the flight deck.

BTW, I also served on Nimitz (80 - 84) and Ike (93 - 96).

Post Gulf War One was not kind to any of the conventionals. Yea they did cut funding too all of them actually and it bit them on the sitter right after 9/11. Two carriers unable to get away was not a fault of command. You can't fix what you don't have to fix with.

Something interesting about the Mayport order. In mid 1980 we were officially given the order that upon our return from the 1981 MED Cruise which turned out to be I.O. also AMERICA was to homeport in Mayport. I got out in October 80 long before that was too happen. We were just completing overhaul then. But reading ships history after that I suspect Reagan's SECNAV or higher obviously rescinded that order.

JFK after the Philly overhaul and botched S.L.E.P. was made a reserve carrier unofficially. Toward the last she also got cannibalized even while astill in commission so the rumors go. The politics toward the Navy especially the conventional carriers from 1990-last one out was horrible. They were very lucky some major causalities didn't happen and cost a lot of lives.

One last note. In fall of 79 when the Iranian Hostage Crisis happened JFK drew short straw. I remember that day real well. We went to Closed Ship for several hours and at first not told of WTH was happening. Then the old man told us and said we are on standby to possibly get underway. It was a fast decision evidently as by that evening we were told JFK was going and we were headed to dry-dock on schedule.

the wors[t] thing that you can hear in a boiler room is complete silence.

New one on me, and very strange. And you're right, that's spooky.

So, even if the basic freq is above your audio range, the amplitude of the steam-scream "deafens" you to all other sounds? That really is strange!

Thanx for posting. Filing under "things I never knew".

That's what we were told in Fire Fighting School and by ones on ship who trained us in Damage Control. Even when the boilers are shut down you'll still should hear some operational noises like fire pumps etc. If you don't hear anything you have Big Trouble. When they are operational you'll hear loud operational noises requiring hearing protection.

U-238, are you telling me China is exporting scrap metal TO the United States?? If that’s true, why are we, the United States, exported some much TO China?? In the Bay Area, San Francisco/Oakland, the new Bay Bridge is being built in China and assembled on site there. I have a friend, who is a welder, who says the welds done in China are trash. I’m pretty sure I’m going to avoid driving over it when it’s done.
