Rolf Voss of Surrey, British Columbia, had shot a caribou near Fort Nelson, in the north-central part of the province, and was carrying parts of the carcass back to his camp in wooded mountain country when a grizzly, perhaps smelling the meat, attacked him.

I frankly don’t know if this is true, but I have heard that the bears actually will come once they hear the shot. A dinner bell, if you will. I do know that once salmon fishing in Canada bears were known to follow fishing parties, and we were told that if you landed a salmon and you see a bear come towards you, you should politely STEP AWAY FROM THE FISH!

I lived in AK for 2 years in the bush, and yes...bears will come investigate shots. They are smarter than dogs at any given age with little to no fear of man now that most people, even in remote AK, take their pictures rather than their lives. It is the gut pile they are after, not the man or the meat really.....like people, most bears avoid trouble and grab easy meals rather than fight for a prime cut.
