Are you sure you’re not referring to Jericho? If so there were a lot more episodes than I though.

No - it’s definitely “Jeremiah”... I found it quite by accident while browsing Hulu.com, and have watched it a number of times - the first couple of times for plot (it’s a heckuva yarn) and story, and then afterwards for the really well-thought-through background details..
