“...he is a Sunni...”

Interesting, my take is the opposite. I’d like to see your evidence as I’m open to new information:

Al Sadr (Shia) left alone
Iran (Shia) coddled, nothing but words, no real action against
Hezbollah (shia) takes their side against Israel
Bin Laden (sunni) dead
Iraq (sunni ruled) followed Bush plan
Afghanistan (fighting Taliban sunni) escalated, added troops, only getting out now in order to get reelected.
Gaddafi (sunni) dead, took military action
Taliban (sunni) multiple drone attacks, lots of dead
Assad (Shia) avoided saying anything until mass slaughter,
now using words only.
Indonesia: Sunni majority, but priveleged class is mostly shia, Obama of course grew up in that priveleged class.

I’m not sure whether he would be Sunni or Shia. My point was more to point out that his motivation would be Muslim based.

In your list, you’ve mis-ID’d Assad as a Shia, he is Alawi. Alawis are sometimes identified and even prefixed as Shia, but they have less in common with Shia than Shias do with Sunnis. The Shia identification goes to lineage to the Mohamed family tree, not straight theology. Alawis are real odd ducks.

That said, Syria is the #1 ally of Shia Iran, so this is probably a mute point.
