an old family antiseptic for dealing with infections is made from something we’ve always called “cheeseweed.” Simply boil the leaves and stems as if you were using them to make tea. Then soak the infected area in this stuff while the water is still as hot as you can handle it. The more times that you re-boil the stems and leaves, and the slimier the solution becomes, the more effective it is. My grandad has also used this to draw out blood poisoning from a wound in his hand that had already advanced all the way to his shoulder.
I have been into survivalism for more than 40 years, and I was glad to see the word prepper come into use but now Im supposed to use the word shit, and mainstream that word into everyday conversation and even internet print and formal use, as a conservative?
You’re welcome. I’m looking for a good suture kit myself. I figure in a pinch, I can just bend a needle, but I have not been able to find any locally. If I have to, I’ll get some from the internet. If anyone knows of a good, reputable site for sutures, please let me know.
You can never be too prepared, and you do your family a good service. I commend you! The problem I have is that having some formal education in medicine, and having lived on a farm, I’m used to patching things up myself. I have never bought the major medical items, because I can patch most things up pretty easily. But if there’s no doctor, or if I’m incapacitated, it’ll be a problem. If anyone knows where to buy the important stuff (sutures, hemostats, quickclot, etc) at a reasonable price, I’m all ears (or eyes, lol). Whenever I do a search, I always seem to find kits with a million bandaids, and not much else, or a big kit that has water etc. that I don’t need and don’t want to pay for. Thanks in advance to anyone who has any recommendations.
Ammonia works best if applied right away. I use it all the time for fire ant bites.
Then I’l going to go right out and get some. I also take an anti-histimine (Benedryl/Clairitin), to help and it seems to (the benedryl better than the Clairitin), but you’ve made a believer out of me if you’ve done both. I’ve got 90 days till the little beasts come forth from their evil abyss, and this year I’ll be ready!
Thanks for the heads up. If you don’t get stitches within 8 hours, the wound will fill with bacteria and you’ll get lockjaw and you’ll be like a pit bull ‘cause they’ll need like pliers to get your mouth open and you’ll die a horrible death and people at your funeral will say, “Man, he looks like sh!t!”
I’ve purchased quite a bit of medical supplies on Amazon. Even with shipping its been cheaper than buying local.

Why not get a tetanus shot now?
Kartographer, thanks for the ping(s). Your posts are invaluable and I don’t think I’ve really thanked you.
Anyway..that’s it...
:)
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is used as a local anesthetic in persons who are allergic to other medicines.

Seems one could potentially put this knowledge to use in a “where there is no doctor” scenario.
And FYI, I’m not a real doctor although I play one on T.V.
Another thing....put up bat houses if possible. They eat a TON of mosquitoes. We have both bats and purple martins (the Martins arrive in the early spring and their population is growing here)...and between them both....very few mosquitoes survive.
;-)
Where to get tetanus shots??
I’ve got first aid stuff, use it often. My own versions, that is. I make my own bandages from folded flannel and adhesive tape or even masking tape as necessary. I use my own anti biotic stuff too. But you gotta have something. Cuts and other seemingly small wounds can go septic and cause systemic infection or even death.
Applying turmeric powder is also useful for wounds. Germs don’t like it and it is considered to speed wound healing, tissue growth etc. In India bandaids have turmeric in them. I generally put some tea tree oil on wounds, then sprinkle turmeric powder, than apply bandage. Sometimes clay as well, depends on the wound.
For bruises that do not break the skin, a Chinese linament called Dit Da Jao (Or Dit Da Jow) is incredible.
Is the Benadryl something you can crush up into a powder and possibly mix with water to form a paste.. I can imagine applying this to a wound area.
Or, ‘the poop hits the propellor’, or ‘the feces hit the fan’.
You could do that, I suppose.
Could you add me to the Prepper Ping list? I’d appreciate it.
Try this: When the feces impacts the rotating blades.
