There are a couple false "truths" which seem to be dictating much if not most of the Republican presidential race. One is that Newt Gingrich would be a great debater against President Obama. This accepted conventional wisdom is not only bogus; it is a myth of Herculean proportions.
It appears that Gingrich's entire argument for the nomination is that he is the guy we want in a nationally televised verbal brawl with the media's all-time favorite candidate. Nary has an opportunity passed when Newt fails to, in his typically egomaniacal style and with great bombast, assure us that all will be right with the world once Obama is forced to take him on in the ultimate battle of the brains.

Of course it’s a Myth (what an appropriate way to put it!).
Fact is, since it’s no contest, zer() won’t even show up, if it’s Newt. But, if it’s Myth... zer() will push for a daily debate.
Well it’s looking like Newt or Mitt and a debate between Mitt and Obama will be Obama saying what he believes and Mitt saying “I agree.”
I choose Newt.

I’ve heard others assert this, but never Newt himself.
Don’t believe your lying eyes and ears!
Newt is just horrible at debating
Obama would love to debate him, he is just that bad.
And I think Ziegler becomes a master-debater when he thinks of Obama too.
Has anyone ever heard Newt Gingrich, “in his typically egomaniacal style and with great bombast”, state assurances that he could right everything wrong in the world by debating BHO2?
I certainly have not heard anything like that at any time.
On Free Republic, I’ve read others claim this for Newt, but haven’t seen or heard any claims for this from the man himself.
Since I've been saying this myself for weeks, I have to agree.
The Boy King will only accept "townhall" forums, dontcha know. And probably only one at that.
No thanks.
All Newt has said is he wants to debate Obama on his record, on ideology and force Obama to DEFEND his political views... We all know the man-boy in chief will never agree to a lincoln douglas debate with Newt, but if Newt does (and I assume will) take the ideological battle to Obama, and actually debate political ideology vs tit for tat sound bites, Obama will be lambasted.
The guy can’t think on his feet, can’t articulate his stands, has a record worse than anyone who’s held the office in the past 40 years or more.
Methinks the author of this article has greatly overestimated the intellectual capacity and debating skills of the Idiot-in-Chief ... providing, of course, that he can't bring his teleprompter to the debate.
What a Clinton-esque guy!! It’s so horrible how Gingrich deflected the swinging question in last nights debate!
And holding up his daughters to deflect the question, too!
.........BAD!!! really bad...
One of Newt’s great moments was when he said if Obama wins re-election he will kick his destruction of this country into high gear. Of course, we already know that but it was good to hear one of the candidates say it and they cannot say it enough.
What’s the matter Ziegler? Did Gingrich ignore unsolicited advice from you, so you feel the need to unload?
I still shake my head at the idea of Obama as an intellectual, a fabulous orator, a great debater,,, etc. I just don’t see it. He was popular because he was a black metrosexual urban type,,,, thats it, period.
0bamma would have to be out of his mind to agree to a debate against Newt. However Newt if he stayed on point could get mileage out of his refusal.
However it is important to have someone who can articulate conservatism. Bush either couldn’t or didn’t want to and look where that got us.
Another example of mental masterbation from someone who probably is smoking synthetic marijuana.
Newt will get Obama to debate because he will tail him whereever he goes and debate what Obama says that day.
Newt will articulate better than anyone else conservative principles and the vast difference between the philosophies of the two men.
If Obama has a philosophy, why be ashamed of it?
This is also why I want the primary to go on until it’s just Romney and Newt up there...just the two of them. You can keep Paul in there for laughs, but I think these people are getting better each time.
Eventually we get off the topic of hitting each other, and just discussing the issues in the Lincoln-Douglas style.
I would look forward to this.
I don’t want this thing to end now. It’s starting to get good, and with Newt each time it’s a learning experience.
Memo to Zeigler: Have you ever heard Barry speak without benefit of TOTUS? Newt Gingrich will eviscerate Obama in any debate. It won’t even be close. Better than debating Newt will criticize, ridicule and challenge Barry every day until election day. Thats the difference between Newt and Mitt.
You are absolutely correct. Newt can call for debates until the cows come home and Obama will simply say no, I’m too busy being president. There goes Newt’s only advantage. He certainly can’t claim a pleasant, cheerful personality or great managerial skills or the solid backing of former colleagues. His pugnacious personality appeals to red meat conservatives but maybe less so to independents and disaffected Democrats who we’ll need to attract if we want to win. Then there’s all that baggage and his age. If Romney must release tax records, then Newt should release his medical records—all of them.
Yeah, I should really listen to a pinhead who said this in another blog dropping:
http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/01/the_six_dirty_secrets_of_presidential_politics_in_2012.html
The reason why Romney is indeed the most electable Republican left is because he makes the race more of a pure referendum on Obama than any of the others (though not as much as a Tim Pawlenty would have).
Obama will have to face Newt in a debate, he can’t avoid it. It’s destiny.
