Of those, 68 federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire in 2011, a 15 per cent jump from the year before.
Good thing there wasn't a HUGH increase in federal, state and local officers over the last several years. Oh, wait...
"This is a devastating and unacceptable trend," Attorney General Eric Holder said in a written statement.
"Each of these deaths is a tragic reminder of the threats that law enforcement officers face each day -- and the fact that too many guns have fallen into the hands of those who are not legally permitted to possess them."
See? Fast & Furious was justified because criminal peasants r trying to kill our heroes in blue.
law enforcement death rate is falling, not rising
he National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund tracks law enforcement deaths by year and jurisdiction, while the Officer Down Memorial Page provides breakdowns by state. These include both felonious deaths (which are primarily firearms-related) and accidental deaths (which are primarily traffic-related). The long-term trend in officer deaths is shown in the first figure below. You can see peaks of 285 deaths in 1930, 279 in 1974, and 240 in 2001, but a decline to 116 officer deaths in 2009.

This is "Increase The Police State" propaganda.
What a nightmare Oakland is. You couldn’t pay me enough to be a police officer in a mental asylum zoo like that.
