Fox Newss Greg Gutfeld tackled the often vexing world of prime time on Tuesday when he tried to fill some big shoes hosting Fox Newss top-ranked show The OReilly Factor. It was an equal-parts bold and odd choice, putting the networks oft-times unpredictable, distinctly snarky and libertarian-minded funnyman as replacement host of the Fox News flagship program. But would Gutfeld measure as OReillys FNC tent-pole?
Gutfeld handled the reins of hosting The Factor with aplomb, putting his quick-hit comedic commentary aside just enough to fit in on OReillys self-described traditionalist program. At several points during last nights show, the Red Eye host channeled OReillys trademark stone-faced gravitas, for example a point made about youth violence. I think most of this violence happens because it can. And we have become more permissive and I think, parents and people are scared to confront kids because they fear they are going to get hurt or sued, Gutfeld said in reference to the fights that broke out at the Mall of America. You know, if you are on a subway, something is happening, you stay away from it because you dont want to be bothered. One of these days you are going to have to step in.
In that moment, Gutfeld quite nearly perfectly captured the OReilly ethos of personal responsibility, and communicated it very succinctly. But all the while, he was still very much doing his own thing.
Gutfelds turn at anchoring a prime time show was remarkable in that he is so often cast as the face of the networks continued shift on cable to talk about the news and away from actual news reports as the New York Timess Brian Stelter had described The Five.
In his turn as prime-time anchor, Gutfeld showed he was quite competent and prepared to take the driver seat in the high-stakes OReilly slot and performed well in a hard news capacity. With a sharp performance Tuesday, Fox News higher-ups undoubtedly took notice.
Watch several clips from Gutfelds command performance as Bill OReillys fill-in below via Fox News:

Does that mean we have a chance of getting rid of the guy with the eye make up as well?
The only show I watch on Fox, if I’m at home, is Cavuto.
I thought he did good. Gutfeld has a way of getting to the bottom line while keeping things light.
Gutfeld did great, so O’Reilly will probably ban him for life. Why do so many people go to the trouble to post “I don’t watch FOX” every time there’s a FOX thread? If you don’t watch it, what makes you think your opinion is of any interest to anybody?
If you don’t watch FOX, why are you commenting?
Fox is part of the political discussion, and is attacked as part of the right, whether we watch it or not we are aware of it, pay attention to it, and have opinions on it.
The O’Reilly show is relevant to all freepers since he has used his show to lie about us and attack us.
I still miss Laurie Dhue.
If you dont watch FOX, why are you commenting?
+++++++++++
That’s a fair question.
My answer: So I can point out, once again, that this isn’t your father’s Fox News. This is the New Fox News. Fair and Balanced is out the door and replaced by an editorial policy that is effectively an endorsement of Romney. They have joined their MSM brethren in their campaign to choose another RINO for the GOP nomination. And worse, they have turned on Gingrich with the most mean-spirited series of attacks that I have ever seen on a news network.
I have totally lost confidence in Fox. I’m through with them.
One of the funniest episodes that I watched was when Mr. Bill inquired about Gutfeld being Jewish and received the response that he was a Catholic and that he had even been an altar boy. Mr. O was funny to watch during Greg’s response.
I Dhue too!!
I missed that. Watching 0’Really make an ass of himself is the best part of the Factor.
You could have “The Dhue Point.”
Better, far better, than Ted Baxter himself.
As I recall she admitted to being an alcoholic. Wonder how she’s doing...well I hope.
I'll have to try and find it on youtube I guess. Heard about about some trouble, always wondered what happened.
Gutfeld was alright, it's just not the right show for him. He's great on The Five, and Red Eye.

I would not know what to name it, but I saw that show and Greg did a tremendous job..I really like him..He is the best thing to come along at FOX in some time..His quick wit and his willingness to call “a spade a spade” makes me think he may be an honest genius. THE FIVE is a FOX program I DVR and watch on a daily basis..Greg is a part of that.
Physically, Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham are in the lightweight or flyweight divisions, mentally and rhetorically, they’re heavyweights.
BOR is a brilliant marketer. Second, Ingraham has been subbing for years and Gutfeld just once. He did great.
“I saw him take it to Alan Colmes..”
As soon as Colms comes on, Fox goes off. Same with Beckel, Williams and Shamooo Green.
On The Five, yesterday, he said he had lost 50 pounds and was very proud that he had kept it off.
