That prediction of doom comes from a recently rediscovered speech given by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a liberal Democrat Senator but an honest one, who warned in 1980 what was already coming to pass. He was particularly outraged at the then-new term, "Tax Expenditure," which was the government's way of saying that all your money belongs to them, and if they let you keep a bit of it, that's a government "expenditure."

The left dislikes institutional pluralism and real diversity because pluralism and diversity (1) lead to differential outcomes and (2) regularly expose the poor performance of collectivist arrangements. The demand for government control is driven by the desire to suppress this competition and level outcomes. Except for the nomenklatura, of course.
