I've had a federal licence for the last 40-umptee years. I have a tube reciever and transmitter that I kept just for a solar-flare type occasion.

IRT food, you are correct. Lots of folks will look at perfectly good food, and have no idea how to kill or prep it. Same thing with water. I would expect a lot to die of the old diseases like typhoid and cholora.
