The Romneybots just don’t get it. We are fully aware of these things Gingrich has done. They are baked into our calculations. He’s still the better choice to Romney simply because he has conservative bona fides. It was not Romney who carted and directed the attack on the dems and their culture of corruption in `94. It was not Romney who authored the Contract with America. It was not Romney who forced Clinton’s hand on welfare reform and it was not Romney who attempted to hold Clinton accountable for his illegal actions through impeachment.
It WAS Romney who birthed Romneycare which was the blue print to Obamacare. It WAS Romney who disavowed Reagan in 1994 while running against Teddy. It was Romney who advocated gun control and abortion.
No matter what the Romneybots say and/or do, they can not make Romney have conservative bona fides and they can not take away from Newt his conservative bona fides.
Therefore, game over for Romney.,
Well, I’m NOT a Romneybot, but have lived a few years (63) and have learned from too many past experiences that Newt cannot be trusted. He knows what to say to what group. Like the Bible says that we like to have people around us that tell us what we want to hear? Well, Newt has mastered the game of telling us what we wanted to hear. He got a COUPLE concessions from Clinton, but by that time, he was so over the conservatives and so into Newt that he blew everything off. Nothing lasted that he got. If anything, everything is worse today. So, it’s not that we’re all for Romney. Stop the crap about that and listen! No votes have been counted in any primary or caucus yet. And, like Sean Hannity says, this is the time to get the stuff out there so people know the good and the bad, let people sort it out now so we can ponder these things BEFORE we go to vote starting in January. I’m also tired of everybody saying that Newt is the only one who can take on Obama. There is no guarantee that Newt could win, given his baggage and flip-flops in the past. Obama has lots of ammunition from his (Newt’s) record to nail him on a lot of things. Newt’s ego is another issue. If he falls badly in a debate with Obama, it would be bad, especially with everybody talking about him like he’s the messiah, or something. Folks, we’ve been there, done that. Don’t even have a stupid t-shirt to take home, either. I’m alarmed that Newt might get it. You wait long enough and you’ll see why. The debates do NOT show the real Newt. He’s great and has great ideas he offers in them, but they area dime a dozen and don’t expect him to follow through with much of it because he’ll already be onto something else, and not necessarily something better. He spouts conservative ideas because he has realized that is what we want to hear. He does not lead by example, though. That is the troubling part. Listen to Mark Steyn, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck. There are a LOT of reasons to take a pause in this rush to anoint him. This is the time to look at all the candidates and try to get the word out about the more conservative ones. I don’t want a repeat of 2008. It would be all over.
It wasn't Gingrich who "forced" Clinton's hand on welfare reform, either.
President Clinton vetoed the welfare reform bill the first time it hit his desk.
What happened next?
Gingrich and the GOP caved. They added into the bill "improvements" demanded by Clinton, including billions of dollars in NEW entitlement spending for federally funded childcare programs, new Medicaid eligibility, job subsidies and so on.
After adding billions and billions in NEW entitlement spending, Clinton signed the "improved" bill.
Moreover, some economists believe that this bill really moved very few people off welfare. Rather, they find, the fact that the economy was in the midst of the longest, biggest boom since the end of WWII was responsible for moving 40-80% of those who left welfare to work.
