There's nothing wrong with following the laws already on the books, they just haven't been enforced for the last 60-70 years. I believe that if someone just got here, in the past 10-24 years, or whatever the cut-off is, they're going home, but the border must be secured first. Millions of illegals are working here and paying taxes - that's a fact. You can't work without paying taxes. Working under someone else's SSN, or without proper authorization is a problem. But again, blaming someone who's been here for 25 years, or so, illegally, for the government's failure to secure our borders, and to enforce the law is to blame the wrong party.
If you inadvertently forgot to report some income on your tax return 4 years ago, and the IRS didn't catch it, should you be forced to pay it now? Well, unless it was more than $25,000, then the statute of limitations has expired, and the IRS can't assess additional taxes, nor could you amend your tax return after the statute has expired.
If you owe back taxes, and it's been more than 10 years since the tax was assessed, should you be forced to pay it? Nope. You are under no obligation, because the Statute of Limitations on collections is 10 years. Thus, the IRS must write-off the balance.
So what is the Statute of Limitations on entering the country illegally? There is none. Should there be? Perhaps in some circumstances, on a limited basis (i.e. haven't broken other laws, have paid taxes, have been here for 25 years or more, have children and grandchildren who are citizens, are contributing to society), but there should not be blanket amnesty. I don't know what you heard, but that's what I heard.
Total nonsense that's been repeated so often some people have been brainwashed into accepting it (or they are actually open borders believers). Any president who desired it could begin enforcing immigration at the employer level today.
We see the result in every state that passed their own laws; illegals begin to leave, often just in anticipation that the new laws will be enforced.
That "secure the border first" is the Juan McCain Ruse that he used in 2008 campaign and during his 2010 senate reelection campaign. It's nonsense, and nothing but the latest procrastination technique by politicians who have no intention of enforcing the law, now or later.
