But I question Newts timing
So do I. But there are a surprisingly large number of independents in Iowa. Not to mention farmers who depend on migrant labor. So it might even help him in Iowa. After all, it is a blue state at heart.

Not to mention farmers who depend on migrant labor. In Iowa? Corn and wheat are not harvested by hand, and I am unaware of a proliferation of lettuce fields and fruit orchards in the Hawkeye state.

The narrative in the reporting hasn't been good today. That doesn't help. Narratives and conventional wisdom's feed on themselves. It's not great when the media continually oversimplifies Newt's position as amnesty and highlights how this may damage Newt with Iowans.
In Newts favor - as I said before - Iowans are bent on stopping Romney. Newts competition for the Not Romney slot is weak - if not outright nonviable. If Iowans also see it that way this may work out for Newt.
I would have thought it wise for Newt to get out front of this and get his face on the news shows today to further clarify his position. So far Newt has not been seen.
