Chris Matthews: Herman Cain Isn’t A Serious Candidate, Nor A Newspaper Reader
Mediaite ^ | November 2, 2011 | Alex Alvarez

This afternoon, Martin Bashir invited MSNBC colleague Chris Matthews onto is program to discuss both the personal and policy-related issues surrounding GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain‘s campaign.

Where policy is concerned, asked Bashir, “is Herman Cain a serious candidate for president?” Matthews’ response was simple, and blunt:

No. And the reason he’s not is he is not prepared even to the point of being a newspaper reader. I can tell — we all can — when someone is unfamiliar with a term like “neoconservative,” which has been at the heart of the whole debate over the war with Iraq, with of course the neoconservatives fighting very hard to wage that war and others opposed to them for that reason.

To not know that the Chinese have had, the PRC has had nuclear weaponry since the 60s is ignorance. These are facts of our fundamental national and international situation.

Bashir followed up by asking whether it’s become “hip to be dumb,” with Matthews nodding that, yes, it certainly is, and that Sarah Palin looks downright genius when compared to Cain. (For those of you who are busy being very hip: Chris Matthews doesn’t view Palin as one of our nation’s most brilliant minds.)

Matthews added that, while he encourages rhetoric meant to take elitist attitudes to task, he can’t support anti-intellectualism or anti-academic prejudice.

Have a look at their discussion, from MSNBC:

I heard one old newspaper guy say that we should still read papers because they’re easier to read on the toilet than laptops are. Sounds like a huge vote of confidence in the quality of their product...

"To not know that the Chinese have had, the PRC has had nuclear weaponry since the 60s is ignorance. These are facts of our fundamental national and international situation."

From another thread I learned Cain wrote in one book about his experience working up ballistics and other problems for the Navy and, specifically, on various Chinese nuclear weapons.

I haven't read any candidate's book so I don't know if FR claim is true but it was very detailed and credible.

Let's assume it is in Cain's book, how STUPID is a major network's senior political analyst to have not read a candidate's books and be able to put the candidate's comments into context, you know, to provide insightful analysis?

Hey Chrissy.... are you familiar with LARRY SINCLAIR? Why wasn’t his name on the front pages of papers when Ubama was a candidate?

To not know that the Chinese have had, the PRC has had nuclear weaponry since the 60s is ignorance

Which, Chrissy, shows the total ignorance on your part. He never said that the Chinese didn't have nuclear weapons. He said that they were trying to develop nuclear capability. Capability and weapons are two different things. He said it in the context of them developing aircraft carriers. China is currently working on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier that will give them nuclear capabilities they haven’t had before.

And to Bashir about his statement Is it hip to be dumb If it is, then you must be the hippest man in America. It would take a total ignoramus to believe that a man who was a former Navy missile ballistics employee wouldn’t know about China’s nukes . During the Vietnam War, he examined the test launches of the Dongfeng I and Donfeng II missiles and plotted out the trajectories and capabilities of its delivery of nuclear warheads. So Chrissy and Bashir, it seems the two of you are the most ignorant of all.

Why doesn’t MSNBC replace that old white man with a smart Latina? Too many white faces on those liberal networks.
