As much as we may wish otherwise, the vast majority of those reading this will never find themselves behind the wheel of a Formula 1 race car. And even if they did, actually piloting one of these beasts at speed around a real race track (video games don't count) is a practice best left to the professionals.
This being the case, the closest you're likely to get to seeing what it's really like to drive an F1 car is by watching the video after the break. Lucas di Grassi, formerly a driver for Virgin Racing and now the official test driver for Pirelli, strapped an eye-level camera to his helmet and set out for a lap at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.

Interesting.
I was quite competent in slow SCCA cars, but I found my ability rapidly diminished as the speed went up.
I think each person only has so much built-in ability. Guys who run F-1 have a whole lot of it.
Looks like he hit 250 or 260 down one of the straights. Is that mph or kph?
That seemed too fast for the track. It seemed he was constantly shifting without hitting top end. Or maybe that’s just my perception.
Just watching the video scared me bleepless. Good googly-moogly, that is death defying.
Many thanks..Great vid/
Bah...pavement wimps...try 2010 Baja 1000 Robby Gordon/Trophy Truck in car footage.

The metallic banging you here is the suspension cycling through about 26 front/30 inches rear wheel travel ;)
As much as they may wish, not many can shoot methamphetamine at night while driving 75. But some can.
Gotta be KPH.
pin.....g
I’d be to scared to have any fun in a car like that.
Some years ago I remember Richard Petty talking about racing on the superspeedways and saying that the speeds were still breathtaking for the first couple of laps.
kph?
Yeah, probably. The straight wasn’t long enough to reach 250 in MPH. Plus Euro car, Euro driver - KPH.
...really tame compared to recent on board cams on the bikes of the TT bikes on the Isle of Man. Now that’s insanity...

That was fun to watch. I head to the track for car club driving schools a couple of weekends a year, and drive a vastly inferior car at vastly inferior speeds with vastly inferior skills, but this video will help keep my inner Walter Mitty going till the next time I’m out there =).
Bump
Pirelli's tester, maybe he'll get another ride...
Yeah, Isle of Man has always blown me away. Would do the same at half that speed.
I’d quite like to be a tester for the Pirelli calendar.
absolutely...!!!
