I can still recall the distant and not so distant crackle of gun fire as dozens of our neighbors in the countryside surrounding our home limbered up their various firearms while the Hough (pronounced "huff") area in Cleveland (30 miles to our north) burned to the ground. That was in 1966. Two years later, following MLK's assassination and in spite of Cleveland having the first black mayor of a major (at that time) American city, the riots happened again and back came the backyard practice.

There were no excursions by the rioters to the suburbs or even outside a few blocks area of the east side so no race war occurred. They destroyed, as usual, their own homes and businesses. This time may be different. Now they will have the tacit support of an entire presidential administration and one of the two main political parties.

I'm from the Cleveland area, and I was in basic training at Great Lakes NTC when the Hough riots happened. The first I heard about it was when I read the Chicago Trib, and there on the front page was a picture of my future brother in law with his National Guard unit, out patrolling the streets of Hough in full battle gear.

Sort of an unsettling image for me...

This false idea keeps getting repeated. They did NOT destroy their own homes and businesses. The people who were rioting did not own any of the real estate that got destroyed or businesses that got looted. The actual owners of those businesses mostly lived outside the "inner city" area, and were in many cases either bankrupted or their insurance rates were raised to prohibitive levels.

In any new riots, the taxpayers will be stuck with the bill. That's you and me.
