Ah, Mr W, you are still one of my musical heroes……
At 87 Slim Whitman is still around (though he heard rumours of his own death in 2008) but in the early 50s he was very big on the US country scene. In America he had faded in the charts by the end of the decade but he was always popular in Europe and frequently toured there.
Of course, and I can now say that I've met Tijeras Slim!

Andy K, the guy introducing Slim went to highschool with one of my brothers. He was a legend then for his reading of “Howl” in english class.
That’s Slim Pickins! I would have loved to see him and Whitman together in a film.
Wasn’t he spoofed on SCTV?
perhaps slim whitman is somewhere in the lineage of both.
