Sarah Churman, 29, was born deaf. Until recently, she had never heard the sound of her own voice. But thanks to a hearing implant, Churman was able to experience a miracle.
She says on her YouTube channel that shes worn hearing aids since she was two years old and has gotten by on reading lips. Churman goes on to explain the background behind her clear speech:
My whole life Ive been complimented on how well I speak. I dont really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English. My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound. Ive worked very hard to be able to interact and blend in.....only thing I can say is God is good.
The device shes received is not a hearing aid. Its implanted in the middle ear and picks up sound through the ear canal, minimizing background noise and acoustic feedback, according to Envoy Medical.
You got that right. Why government can’t leave the private sector alone, I don’t know. The private sector will make just about anything affordable and reliable based on a free market.
Thank You for sharing this. A touching and very precious moment.
Talks too well to be born deaf.
I’m just saying.
God bless you.
Well that is truly profound! Looks the video is going viral...Huffington’s picked it up and she’ll be on Tv Monday morning.
Congradulations little lady...”This is ‘the day’ the Lord has made and we will rejoice and be glad in it”....
Is this a personal experience you’re sharing or is that from the video?
Yea, so was the baby, you know what I’m saying?
Your a ignorant moron...you know what I’m saying?
Watching the little baby too was profound. What a huge gift sound is for us. I will never forget this. Thanks again for sharing. May your life and that of this little baby too continued to be blessed :).
Oh, this is so wonderful!
The money spent on the tattoos could have been spent on the hearing implant.
God be praised.
Yes, Obama does wish to tax the crap out of these medical devices.
Damn his hyde
Esteem requires the cochlea to be functional; it works by increasing the movement of inner-ear bones. Probably this woman had experienced a serious deficit, but not complete loss. I sat in on one of their meetings and about 1/2 way through, the presenter revealed that she herself was a user of the device. It’s pretty remarkable.
The Esteem team drew on the experience (and people themselves, I think) involved in pacemaker design. The actual device can be swapped out, if necessary, leaving the surgically implanted sensor and actuator in place. So, if in a few years you need a battery replacement, you can get a new Esteem device in the process, together with whatever software upgrades have happened in the meantime. Lifetime of the battery is a few years; I don’t know exactly. That number is expected to grow. (end of memory dump) (not a user or a medical professional, just an interested person)
“Congratulations! But how can you speak so well if you were born deaf?”
She has severe to profound hearing impairment. That’s enough I should know as I have the same condition. It’s possible, but it’s difficult.
“You realize of course that you will now be excommunicated from the Sacred Order of Militant Deafies?”
They can kiss my ass. I’m so happy. :) It would be amazing to be able to hear properly.
My wife was in our local hospital a few years ago to have some work done and a young Canadian boy was in the check in area at the same time. She got to talking to the boy’s parents and found out that the boy was there to have a cochlear implant installed. He was having it done in the US because the Canadian government decided that since he could read lips and sign he did not need to be able to hear.
That, folks, is government healthcare.

Thanks for that kcvl. I was just posting as a interesting link and didn’t go into detail on it since I found it on AOL and HuffPost linking is not allowed here. The Admin was kind enough to modify the ‘excerpt’ by adding your post information that I re-submitted.
I just posted links to videos, that is all.
I am so happy for you that I have tears in my eyes!! May your blessings in life continue and you are truly an inspiration.
That is one smart baby! See how he immediately reacts, physically, to his mother’s voice, entranced, and tries to imitate? He gets it!
