What they have done is puff up the virtue of tolerance (and it is a virtue) to be the absolute virtue, the only real virtue, the very pinnacle of all that is right and true and proper. They then use that to steamroller anyone who objects to their agenda on grounds of Truth, Justice, Common sense, Logic, Fairness, Practicality or any other reason. Thus:

Your objections to Gays being in the military on the grounds that recruitment will plummet and discipline crumble are dismissed as evidence of "intolerance" to homosexuals.

Your objections to teaching ten year olds about condoms and "safe sex" on the grounds that it doesn't work are dismissed as being evidence of "intolerance" to "the kids".

Your objections to affirmative action programs on the grounds that they are unfair to whites (and also don't work) are dismissed as being evidence of "intolerance" towards minorities.

Your objections to abortion on the grounds that it is murder are dismissed as evidence of "intolerance" to women's rights.

Your objections to Obama's presidential decrees on the grounds that he's a statist and closet marxist are dismissed as evidence of "intolerance" of black people.
