That’s exactly what stops it. The average Joe looking at his receipt won’t tolerate it going up - especially if they aren’t getting relief from gov’t rebates.

Sure, sales taxes don’t rise.... And that’s why sales taxes have crept up from a fraction of a percent to 8% and higher in various locations around the country.

True enough. Michigan has had the 6% sales tax since 1994 which is a very long time as such things go. Not too many legislators are dumb enough to raise a direct tax that the people will see immediately.
