“...and we will tumble into the sun.”

You realize in two years we will hear this from the Survival Porn crowd that what you just said is true: “Read it some years ago how the Earth could stop spinning and tumble into the sun due to an EMP blast from the NORKs. It would stop the magnetic field in its tracks and the planet would be drawn into the sun. Yep, some General for NORAD said it. I think I read a book from Rawles about it, too. Must be true. Just sayin.”

If we don’t fort up in the Mountain Northwest ASAP, we’re doomed. Everybody outside of there is as good as dead.

“The electronics of planes are generally not designed to deal with that at all - with military aircraft a possible exception. “

Let me give you the bottom half of my professional signature line: “Airborne/Navigation, Aircraft Safety Critical Embedded Systems”. So, let me correct you: The energy levels induced by EMP pale in comparison to lightening induced energy levels and aircraft systems will handle either just fine.

If EMP was a realistic weapon we would have them. No military would go without a weapon that could destroy all things electronic and electrical. That would be a Godsend. The actual information regarding such a subject is obviously classified, but suffice it to say, we don’t have such weapons.

>> I’m marching the family to the beach if I can’t get a car to run and stealing a sailboat...I’ll just keep going until I see harbor lights on at night.

That’s a great plan. Very similar to mine.

Welllllllll

evidently there’s a very different opinion on the part of two different engineers?

My Christian Bro is an engineer.

He’s meticulous in all he does and says. ObComm hardly defines it—he’s wayyyyyyy beyond ObCom.

Very rarely does he say anything as a fact unless he’s absolutely certain from extensive knowledge first hand and/or research.

However, I’ll share your post with him and see what he has to say, in response.

Wellllllllllllll CodeToad;

I didn’t realize you had a

NEED TO KNOW

about 100% OF EVERYTHING in our entire arsenal etc.

How often does God line up at your window to get

HIS Omniscient card stamped?

Hang on for a tick, CT. Remember, nuclear weapons DO cause EMP, that is KNOWN. We DO have EMP weapons, therefore, and they ARE realistic.

Now, let's understand that the hype about them is a little over the top, but the phenomenon is real and destructive.

Just not as destructive as the survival blogs claim.

In an EMP burst, even unprotected hardware has been known to survive, right in the EMP 'kill zone'. If EMP was actually performed by a terrorist state, I would wager only 20% of the equipment would be burned, and only then in a 300 mile radius -- IF they got everything right.

I read that the EMP would reverse the field on all the neutrinos, and the earth’s magnetic field would switch its axis, and we will tumble into the sun.

Frank Lautenberg wisely counsels us that, if you shoot a .50 caliber rifle at the sun, you can put it out.

That would be very bad. We should ban guns.

No one said EMP wasn’t real, it just isn’t real bad.

One thing these “EMP kills all things electronic and electrical” hyperbole types fail to see right in front of their faces is that if EMP actually did that then how did we get all those images and measurements of nuclear blasts from all those years when they didn’t protect at all from EMP?

EMP has taken out a few street lamps, a telephone cicuit, and a few odds and ends but the average Joe never even knew it happened. *yawn*

Ice storms, blizzards, hurricanes, and other natural disasters have done more harm and society didn’t collapse and zombies weren’t roaming the Earth.

Incorrect. Explain ME.

While I am inclined towards the lessening of hype about EMP, I feel you go too far the other way. I think it's a serious threat, but not a 100% shutdown scenario. Read the document I posted and you might end up agreeing.

Probably a 1-in-5 chance of losing your cellphone in the effected area.

You, Laz, were put on Earth to hit it when no one else will. It keeps the ugos happy. That explains you.

“We DO have EMP weapons”

Actually, we don’t. No warhead of that type exists in our nuclear arsenal.

Actually, we do. All nuclear weapons cause EMP effects.

A high-altitude nuclear detonation produces an immediate flux of gamma rays from the nuclear reactions within the device. These photons in turn produce high energy free electrons by Compton scattering at altitudes between (roughly) 20 and 40 km. These electrons are then trapped in the Earth's magnetic field, giving rise to an oscillating electric current. This current is asymmetric in general and gives rise to a rapidly rising radiated electromagnetic field called an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Because the electrons are trapped essentially simultaneously, a very large electromagnetic source radiates coherently.

The fact you don't know this basic fact give me pause about your other assertions. No offense intended.

Minor correction: All nuclear weapons *CAN* cause EMP effects.

“The energy levels induced by EMP pale in comparison to lightening induced energy levels”

I agree, Code Toad, but it’s not the energy so much as the rise time that causes the problems. The fast EMP pulse is much higher freq than lightning, so anything that’s influenced by rate will be vulnerable. An EMI filter designed for lightning protection on a digital comm line will pass the EMP pulse. I’ve done lots of Microstripes simulations of boxes and I’ve seen what works and what does not in terms of hardening.

Still, EMP is not the TEOTWAWKI that the people who push these stories think.
