Almost nobody cares. John McCain won the Republican nomination in ‘08 as an advocate of thinly veiled amnesty

McCain became the presumptive nominee of the party with just 33% of the primary vote. He was a disaster and amnesty was part of it. We don't need to nominate another RINO and amnesty advocate like McCain or Bush. An amnesty would destroy this country with the stroke of a pen.

Perry will be hurt by his immigration stance in SC and FL.

July 14, 2010: Florida, Texas Support Arizona's Immigration Law

"Florida, Texas and seven other states filed a brief supporting Arizona's immigration law aimed at cracking down on illegal migrants after the U.S. government sued to block enforcement of the law.

Arizona's statute doesn't establish an immigration policy that would interfere with federal law, countering the U.S. argument, the states said in the filing today in federal court in Phoenix. The law isn't an "obstacle" to Congress' objectives, the states wrote. .........

The states, in their filing, asked U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton to reject the U.S. injunction request. Bolton scheduled a hearing in the case for July 22.

Representatives of the U.S. Justice Department didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

The Arizona law makes it a state crime to be in the U.S. illegally. The statute requires local police officers who come in contact with someone for law enforcement reasons to check the individual's immigration status if they suspect the person lacks proper documentation.

Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota and Virginia, plus the territory of the Mariana Islands, also joined in today's brief supporting Arizona...." [end excerpt]

What's your evidence for the proposition that Perry will be hurt by his immigration stance in SC and FL?

Granted McCain was a disaster. That didn't stop him from getting nominated and immigration wasn't a factor. He won both SC and FL. I get that you're upset. You have to get that you are, in that respect, part of a tiny, electorally insignificant minority.

As long as Perry's only competition is Romney there is no way he is hurt by any attack from the right on any subject. Attacks regarding immigration are particularly impotent. Face it, illegal immigration just isn't what people are focused on right now. Perry's foolish line on immigration is not a political loser. Quite the reverse. For every immigration die hard he alienates he'll attract several Hispanic voters, particularly in several key states.

There's a reason Tom Tancredo sank without a trace when he tried to run for President. The immigration issue just doesn't have the power that many people around here think it has.
