Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass state laws across the country mandating Gardasil for girls as young as 11 or 12. It doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country.
...SNIP...
Perry has ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug companys three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, Perrys former chief of staff. His current chief of staffs mother-in-law, Texas Republican state Rep. Dianne White Delisi, is a state director for Women in Government.
The governor also received $6,000 from Mercks political action committee during his re-election campaign.
The order is effective until Perry or a successor changes it, and the Legislature has no authority to repeal it, said Perry spokeswoman Krista Moody. Moody said the Texas Constitution permits the governor, as head of the executive branch, to order other members of the executive branch to adopt rules like this one.

Wrong, this is a big issue, and you can’t wave your hands and make it go away.
The opt-out on the parents; they did not ask permission to vaccinate, it was an ORDER. UNTIL the parents did the legwork and research to find out how to opt out.
I’ve got somewhere to be or I’d discuss further. If you’re sincerely interested, you will research further.
If you’re only interested in exonerating Perry no matter what, then it would be a waste of time to discuss this any further.
Perry=Romney
Well, I do think that Shamnesty was when the Republicans jumped the shark and lost their hold on congress, but I agree.
The lesser of evils is for the general, not the primary. And don’t think that Obama and the press won’t happily use this stuff without pointing out Obama’s myriad cronyist dealings.
First, I’m not pushing any candidate. I have not yet selected a candidate for the 2012 presidential race. Second, yes, it does have a lot to do with manditory vaccinations as this is EXACTLY what people are up in arms over. The government for decades have, without much outcry from anyone, forced parents to vaccinate their children with a number of different vaccinations, and without any real discussion or hearings. People are picking this one case to have a stroke over? Seriously. 14 million out of work, jobs nowhere to be seen, an out of control government spending and taxing the middle class to death, an out of control government deluging businsses and individuals with regulations meant to open the floodgates of redistribution of wealth and transform our Republic into a marxist state, and people are stroking over one man who has acknowledged this decision was a mistake. Puleeeeaaaassseeee!!
It doesn’t bother me at all. But I stand by my orginal post. If Perry goes out over this, Romney will get the nomination unless something drastically changes.
He’s simply being vetted. A lot of us barely knew who he was. Good things are coming out and some bad things. What’s the problem?
I hope if that maroon Christie wades in, he will be as well-vetted as this guy.
That was not meant as an insult to you. It’s just that I’ve met both kinds of people:
1) Those who want all the facts
2) Those who are hostile to the facts
You’ve met both types, too, I’m sure.
It’s not about exonerating anyone. It’s about being focussed on the issues that really matter right now. That being removal of Obozo and the liberals from power.
Again, I agree that he & everyone needs to be vetted. But for me, it’s not enough to make me shift my support to Romney at this point.
The Perry supporters just don’t get it and it doesn’t matter which issue they choose to latch onto for a fight. They won’t understand it and Perry will get pounded every time he goes near a tea party event.
I understand that the opt-out process is awful! Forms to the state to get forms FROM the state. Private schools can decide if parents opt out the kid can’t attend that school.
Perry should undo what he did - the vaccine is available for those who WANT it. I still believe in encouraging and expecting our young women (our children at 11-12 years old) to abstain from harmful behaviors. Parents should be in control as LONG as they are responsible for the children - 18 in most states - unlike most of the “health privacy” laws.
Is Perry a repeat offender? Does anyone know? If this is the ONLY time, I might chalk this up as a mistake. If this is a pattern (as with the current leader) then we need to know. I can forgive 1 honest mistake, more than 1 means it was intentional and that I cannot forgive. I do agree that we need to know a whole lot more about this. Having said that, I cannot believe that Obamas many mandates went unmentioned. For that reason, this article has not credibility (in my view)
Well, that’s absolutely your decision. I can certainly support that. I’m a Sarah supporter but if she doesn’t jump in I’m gonna have to look elsewhere. I’m not going to sit this election out because we have got to get those two freaks in the White House OUT.
My problem with Perry was that when he was attacked last night by Bachmann and Santorum, he looked weak and stunned. I was surprised at that.
Only temporarily, and I don't think McCain's leading role in that is what cost him the election contest against Obama.
-- The lesser of evils is for the general, not the primary. --
At this point, I don't think that the difference matters for the general either, other than timing of the inevitable collapse. And not that collapse is necessarily a catastrophe, the USSR collapsed, and Russia (and Ukraine, Poland, etc.) is doing better now than it was before it collapsed. The US has autonomous states, too, with plenty of law and order on the ground.
-- don't think that Obama and the press won't happily use this stuff without pointing out Obama's myriad cronyist dealings --
Heh. And not only that, a good 40% of the public will buy what the press is selling.
I agree with you. Rather than warming up the tar and feathers I’d rather have the debate focused on the merit of the vaccination. If it was good public health policy based on objective medical criteria, what’s the big deal? As you say, this is far from the first time gov’t has taken a role in requiring vaccinations to save lives and avoid suffering.
Sometimes “we” go a little nuts, seems like...
So you think Republican governors should order mandatory vaccinations? Why don’t we just keep Obama around another four years if you want executive orders for your own good?
Instead of making the vaccine mandatory, "what we should of done was a program that frankly allowed them to opt in or some type of program like that," Perry told the New Hampshire gathering.
This is just a damned travesty.
I guess he had better quit his job in order to save himself from having to defend all of these unfounded charges.
