I just thought it was some weird mid-western accent...
There is a very specific accent here but that ain't it. Generally its called "Inland Northeastern" but there is an even more specific southeastern Michigan / Northwestern Ohio accent that resulted from the influx of southerners in the 40s and 50s.

making the slurry lush impression was OK for a short time, but, as he often does, carried it on much too long. I finally cut the car radio off for 5-10 minutes but he was still doing it. He has an unfortunate tendency to carry on like that with uninteresting topics.
