Steve Jobs, co-founder and two-time CEO of Apple, offered his resignation to the companys board Wednesday.
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apples CEO, I would be the first to let you know, he wrote. Unfortunately, that day has come.
Jobs has been in poor health for some time. In January, he announced that he would be taking a medical leave of absence from the company. He returned to the public spotlight in March to help launch the iPad 2.
Jobs advised the board to execute our succession plan by naming Tim Cook to replace him. Cook, formerly the COO of the company, has been standing in for Jobs since January and was widely tipped to be his successor.
Jobs hinted that he wouldnt be leaving the company altogether and would have a different position inside it.
I believe Apples brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it, Jobs wrote. I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
Heres the full text of Jobs statement as it crossed the wires.
More likely Steve left because the HP Touch pad finally made that whole technology affordable ~ so he just wasn’t needed anymore!
That must be a difficult realization for him. On its face it seems like an admirable decision. Best of luck to him in his health problems.
He better not! He’ll starve!!!/s
How many tens of billions will his resignation knock off Apples stock value?
He’s dead, Jim.
Or just maybe, he thinks the company will be ok without him, and he just wants to spend the rest of his years doing something else.
>> Like him or hate him, you can’t deny Steve Jobs is a visionary who has had a great impact on our world.
Amen. I’m not a huge Apple fan but I appreciate Steve Jobs’ role as an entrepreneur and business leader. There is much to learn from this giant of a man.
Prayers for his health and comfort.
Steve Jobs is the giant towering over the last 30 years of high technology. This is a sad day. I assume his health has deteriorated to the point that he had to resign and he may not be long for this world. Apple is truly the greatest company in the world. I hope they can hold on to that title and role.
It’s already down over 20 points in after hours trading. Tomorrow could be a bloodbath in Apple stock — and the whole market for that matter.
Sounds like Apple could be a good bargain then.
SELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Concur. Mr Jobs is the epitome of the American dream to me. This is written on an IPhone.
I work with Tim Cook’s brother. They are nothing alike I don’t think. His brother is a pretty macho kind of guy; Tim, not so much from what I understand. His brother is a very intelligent guy, though. Both of them from nowhereville, Baldwin County, Alabama.
He made a ton of money for himself and his shareholders in building a formidable company, twice!
Best wishes to him on his health.
About $18 billion in after-hours trading before it was halted...
The end must be near. A shame.
I doubt that he has “years.” People, simply, don’t survive pancreatic cancer.
