“Bear in mind, articles in this source was [sic] quoted by the Oslo murderer.”
Why does the fact that Breivik quoted Gates of Vienna make Dr. Furnish’s post on the mahdis at Lackland AFB suspect? Or am I inferring mistakenly from your “bear in mind” warning that you consider us an unreliable source because a raving butcher quoted us?
In ordinary debate that would be ruled as a fallacy. It’s a typical Leftist smear, “guilt by association”. Seeing it used on FR is disturbing. it’s exactly what the Norwegian media did to us for weeks. And the NYT got in their punches, too. Not to mention the various extremist Leftie blogs and websites.
The butcher quoted Mark Steyn w/approval, and also most of the ppl at National Review Online. Not to mention David Frum, and WSJ. So should we now “bear in mind” some suspicion of them also? Or is Gates of Vienna special?
What, precisely, does one need to bear in mind about Dr. Furnish’s credentials? He’s an expert on this area of Islam and he asked us to post what he’d found because the news disturbed him.
Does this slam about us as a “source quoted by the Oslo murderer” mean we’re not credible? If you have judged us on that basis, then why post the story at all? Unless the real point was actually the last sentence. Which a reasonable man could easily infer.
Interesting tactic, that.
I have posted several articles from the Brussels Journal. And even set up an account to post there. I have not read as many articles from “Gates of Vienna”.
I meant nothing negative, but felt some explanation of the source was warranted. There are some similar points of view common on both Brussels Journal and “Gates of Vienna” and some elements of Free Republic. I am very cautious to state that out of concern of a negative transfer affect here. I am not knowledgeable enough about those two sites to make an accurate judgement about how we are similar and where we differ.
Had I not mentioned the Oslo murderer, someone here would have surely questioned me. Out of caution more than out of disrespect.
I am sorry you felt I was taking a Leftist tack, I despise the Left.
Here is an explanation of what Free Republic is about written by the founder, Jim Robinson:

No, your credibility as a source was not what I questioned. I questioned the content of the article. Only later did I research the author's background and I posted it in the exchange on this thread. I agree with the author that Lackland AFB is not a place for the recruitment of trainees to Islam of any flavor, and I had never heard of the particular group the article was about. Before I posted the article, I looked for any other reference about this AFB and the Mahdi group and found nothing, not a single article anywhere that did not stem from this one source. That is why I was "cautious". That and the fact that everything posted here is easily reference through Google and we all know that there are those who "observe" what happens here. Many of those observers are "enemies" of We the People.
I am well aware of your feelings re the Left. However, to caution readers that Dr. Furnish’s information (re Lackland AFB) appeared on a site that a mass murderer read and mentioned a number of times is nonetheless a favorite Leftist technique. No one of principle would judge another as ‘questionable’for something someone else did w/o their knowledge or consent.
That’s why using this against us is so disturbing. Have they finally infected everyone? Are we at Gates of Vienna, who fight the incursions of shariah against our constitution day-in-day-out, to be approached with caution or shunned (as Hillary Clinton recommends) because a nutter quoted us?
Now if you were to put the same disclaimer on every single entity Breivik named, then I’d comprehend what you were doing — i.e., acting like the terrified Norwegians. But to single out us and Brussels Journal is freaky. It is Charles Johnson all over again: GoV & BJ were his favorite targets.
RE Brussels Journal. Paul Belien started it when he was blacklisted from holding ANY job in Belgium solely because of his political views. Those views are pro-life & pro-American. He was/is under police surveillance, threats were made against him, he has been interrogated repeatedly by the police because he home-schooled. In truth, Paul is a martyr/witness to the evils of the totalitarian democracy whose boot is on his neck. He is a very brave man. Just as those who fought against the Communist Party in this country were smeared for their courage in telling the truth, so are the valiant few in Europe smeared and impoverished.
No, guild by association is not a proper criticism.
Dr. Furnish was a total “unknown” to me. And I was only recently aware of your website. My caution was a “protective” instinct to shield FR and my friends of any possible guilt by association from a website that I was not familiar with.
I had never read Fjordman before all this mess happened. Although he was evidently widely known.
We have common enemies (Islam and the Left). I am not yet sure exactly what ideological overlap we have with writers for your website. If there is common ground between us, it should not be divided.
